it looks like IT changes fast, even to those generally considered as traditional fields. many of the companies, especially those small ones, are trying to get rid of physical servers and migrating to cloud. previously, we need different teams to manage different small parts of the whole IT infrastructure, domain server, data server, app server, network, etc.. but now, when we are on cloud, everything is simplified, and we can manage many tasks in even one admin portal, which reduce the cost of the IT personnel and which, of course, bring more challenges to those affected. with only traditional skills, it’s becoming more difficult for us to stand stably as before, or even we will experience being kicked out of the team as not so many people are needed any more.
so what to do next?
the first thing should be to follow the trends and try to get the essential skills needed in this new round of IT changes to make sure we still can do what we are supposed to do, or even better. and secondly, it should be better for us to try to get familiar with more skills that what is needed for our daily work. IOT seems like get more popular and should still be the hot topic in the next period, and with that, open-source technologies should never be old-fashioned, so it will do much help if we can get more out of that. and nowadays, most of the skills which looked too professional for general people, or even for general IT administrators, are now becoming more easy-going, especially to those that have some basic and general knowledge of IT.
with only one skill, or some skills that are never changed, very probably we will become less competitive in this fast-changing world. always keep any eye on those new trends and get ready to embrace them if they do work.
