Jamf is a great product, good at managing asset record, configuration, policy, management, etc. and actually, that’s how we manage our Macs in our companies. but it might be difficult or take long time for someone who is new to this to get familiar how it works, or act as the administrator to manage their devices, though there are a lot of resources, articles, forum topics, videos, etc. available, and most of them are free of charge.
it’s also one of the issues that bother me sometimes because I need to plan and deploy changes, projects, and others to our end devices, and it will also need some time to train my colleagues to know how it works and how the changes will be rolled out, and sadly, sometimes, it’s not easy to get everyone clear on it. so is there anything that makes it much more easier to manage the devices, especially when it comes to software/application, OS, etc. I think Munki can help.
I have heard of this product, and also gave it some simple and quick tests on how it works. it’s great, especially for software, package management on the end devices, as as long as the infrastructure is set up, it’s much easier to package the application and get them deployed to the end devices. the style is simple and fast, just like many other open-source products and technologies.
I have been testing it in a larger scale, but only the basic functions. the demo is one Mac as repo server, and few others as client, testing the application installation, upgrade, removal, etc. and it all works well.
but when I tried to migrate the repo server to one of my test Ubuntu servers, something wrong showed up due to the connection between the Munki admin tools and the server. I know it’s more complicated when it comes to Server (normal servers, like windows server and linux servers) and client connection. and it will be much more complicated when we decide to roll out what we have tested in our virtual lab. that will take some time but it’s worth the time and energy spent on it.
not some real issues, but just something I have been doing recently and what I am going to do next.
